16 years later this hobby is still fun.

Did you know we’ve been translating Japanese stuff back in 2007, and today marks the 16th anniversary of SHiN-gx Fansubs? What, you don’t know this group? I don’t blame you because SHiN-gx Fansubs isn’t and wasn’t well-known, and by comparison to big groups like gg and Shinsen-Subs, SHiN-gx Fansubs was a random no-name group during when fansubbing became very accessible. But that’s all right because we were out there doing things we enjoy—fansubbing anime we like. Oh and SHiN-gx Fansubs renamed itself to Lazy Lily Fansubs because reasons! From a group of forum posters enjoying anime to fansubbers, Lazy Lily Fansubs has been through a lot of moments good and bad for nearing 2 decades, and we’re still here doing the things we love.

Feel free to follow me reminisce the past, and then share with you our very old fansubs from the SHiN-gx Fansubs days. Some are obsolete, some are incomplete, and some may still hold up today, so maybe you’ll find something in our catalogue that you may like. You’ll be the judge of that and of course, there will be download links below.

I won’t go through the entire SHiN-gx saga by the way… WordPress is already lagging…

FORUM POSTERS TO FANSUBBERS

Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora – Special 3, our first fansub.

Before I discovered 4chan, I was a random forum poster in Animax-Asia and met a lot of friends, and they often talk about anime that weren’t in Animax, and that led me to discover the wonderful world of fansubs. My anime portfolio grew very quickly and with easy access to the internet, my fascination of fansubbing grew. Of course, nothing will take off without a translator, and thankfully one of my forum friends, gx9901, is learning Japanese, and wants to try out fansubbing too. While gx9901 works on a DVD short, I spent a lot of time checking out anime forums on how to fansub—video encoding, text timing, and typesetting, then figuring out bittorrent, how to make a torrent file and host the torrent file. gx9901 gave me the script, I timed it, typeset it, and encoded the video, and boom! Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora – Special 3 by SHiN-gx(9901) Fansubs!

MYSELF; YOURSELF

Our first TV anime fansub was Myself; Yourself, an anime adaptation of Playstation 2 visual novel about a boy moving back to his hometown and reunites with this childhood friends. The anime gets dark by the end involving murder, depression and attempted suicide, but we enjoyed watching the anime as much as we enjoyed fansubbing it. This fansub was made back when we put our names and group logo to the credits because it was the normal thing to do, and looking back, typesetting this anime was kind of a nightmare because I decided to color code each character’s lines. A typical anime episode has around 300+ lines, so that’s a lot of line assignment and I had to do that 13 times. Myself; Yourself may look like a generic slice of life anime, but it holds a special place in my heart as our first TV anime fansub, I get to learn new things as we went along, and the story is very nice if you give it a chance.

And for the ultimate question! Did we actually figure out what Aoi was saying in episode 1?! YES! Lo and behold!

We were supposed to add this in the DVD rip version, but in the end we didn’t do it. I forgot the reason why, but if I were to guess, it’s probably because we lacked the resources and time, or the crew was no longer interested in redoing a fansub we already made. But yeah, we did translate Aoi’s lines in the end. :3

SHOUJO SECT – INNOCENT LOVERS

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the hentai anime adaptation of Shoujo Sect is the first true yuri hentai anime to have come out. As in a hentai anime that is fully yuri with no heterosexual moments, and we were there to fansub that too and it’s also our first hentai anime fansub! The screenshot you see here is a revision and we never got to finish revising episode 2 because the translator left due to disagreements. I’d say you’re better off reading the manga, but the hentai anime adaptation is very decent and still worth a watch.

CANDY BOY

Normally it’s the translator with a bit of my influence who gets to decide what to fansub next, but Candy Boy is my personal pet project. I didn’t translate the anime myself, but I put a lot of thought in the editing process, and I took extra care in the video encoding, especially fixing the scrolling credits to not look like shit (the encode is 29.976 fps as a result). Go and compare our encode to Frostii’s version. And speaking of Frostii, their video encoding was shit to be honest, and it sucked BakaBT favored Frostii’s version to ours. Favoritism, maybe? I don’t know to be honest, and ended up stopped caring. Yeah, DVD encoding requires finesse compared to BD encoding due a ton of factors.

Anyway, Candy Boy is a yuri anime with no boys, and it’s about a pair of twins who are gay with each other. The anime is very short, but it has very charming characters, a cozy atmosphere and, well, it has yuri twincest. And our version still holds up today!

COLLABS WITH OTHER FANSUB GROUPS

I wasn’t lying we were a no-name group, but it doesn’t mean we were always under the radar. We released a handful of complete high quality fansubs that encouraged people who are part of other fansub groups to help us in translation and editing. Actually we got a lot of talented folks after we released Candy Boy. And through these connections we managed to get our name around. That said, our fansub collab with Mamiko Fansubs is a bit of a cheat because the translator for Mamiko Fansubs is gx9901. After a while, gx9901 left the group to form his own and he especially focused his efforts in fansubbing anime featuring voice actress Mamiko Noto, most notably Kimi ni Todoke. Once in a blue moon however, we collab’d a couple of anime like Kaibutsu Oujo (Princess Resurrection/Murder Princess) OVA and Mahoromatic OVA.

I bet you never heard of Kaibutsu Oujo and I highly recommend you watch the TV anime and the OVA. It’s, say, like Addams Family, but with a vampire princess who uses a chainsaw as a weapon. The OVA is technically a different take because it’s darker in tone than the TV anime, but I still recommend watching the TV anime first and then the OVA. We never translated the TV anime, but we did translate the 26th episode that, if my memory serves me correctly, was DVD only.

But the most notable collab was the Kannagi fansubs with Genjo Subs and this was made following the fansubbing “standards” like fansub credits in the credits, and group name plastered on the anime’s title screen. I know it’s very egotistic to have our names along with the real creators, but, yeah, this was common practice and eventually we stopped doing that as SHiN-gx and fansubbing matured.

Kannagi was a fun project with all said and done, and the crew of Genjo Subs were very friendly and supportive, and they have more talent than us. In the collab, Genjo provides the translation and the karaoke effects for the OP and ED, and we provide the video encoding, typesetting and QC. Kannagi was a fun ride with a funny story that follows the trope of a goddess living together with a human, and the shenanigans that follow. Tons of characters and if you fancy stories that’s similar in themes as Ah Megami Sama, then you’ll love Kannagi. But don’t expect an angelic goddess because Nagi has an attitude.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS

Aki Sora

Kuttsukiboshi

Railgun OVA

Yuri Seijin Naoko-san OVA

Morita-san wa Mukuchi OVA

Valkyria Chronicles 3 OVA

SHUFFLE! Memories OVA

Sono Hanabira OVA

SHiN-gx Fansubs was at its strongest when doing OVA anime because there’s less episodes to translate, and less competition/saturation. The big and fast groups do the TV anime while we do OVAs ranging from hentai-but-not-really-hentai, to actual hentai. We have some successful TV anime fansubs too like Working!! S1, Yuru Yuri S1-S2, Yama no Susume, Morita-san wa Mukuchi TV S1-S2, Sasameki Koto, Aoi Hana, and Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan!!

Special mention to Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan!! because this anime is very weird, and I mean that. So there are invisible charger girls that go around charging people who are low energy, and there’s one guy who can see them. Now this guy has a tendency to whack girls with baseball bats but somehow this arouses one of the girls or some can cause their bladder to leak. This one got an official release that comes with an English dub, so you’re better off with that version. I don’t think our fansubs hold up, but we had fun translating this crazy anime.

INCOMPLETE AND DROPPED PROJECTS

Hanasaku Iroha

K-ON!! (S2)

Zero no Tsukaima F

A-Channel

KIDDY GiRL-AND

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

Full Moon wo Sagashite

Not everything went smoothly and we dropped a lot of shows due to technical reasons, very hard dialogue, lack of manpower, or the show was boring. We did manage to fansub 7 episodes of K-ON!!, A-Channel and 6 episodes of Hanasaku Iroha though. But my only regret is Full Moon wo Sagashite because it’s one of my favorite anime of all time and I wanted to release a DVD remaster version, but I wanted a full re-translation instead of just borrowing from the old fansubs, and the DVDs were an encoding challenge with random corrupted frames found throughout each episode and manually fixing each frame was time consuming, it ultimately burnt me out, and I didn’t have the computer power to do all of those efficiently. Also another reason we dropped anime is we were too ambitious for our own good.

DIRECT DOWNLOADS OF OUR OLD FANSUBS

So are you really curious of our old subs? Fret not because we have them all here!

THE OG CREW AND THE FUTURE

I’m the only one left of the OG crew actually. The rest went on their separate ways and I don’t think I can contact them anymore. I still have gx9901’s email address, but he once told me he’s moving away from anime and focusing more on settling down. The OG crew was me SHiN, gx9901, Jo-kun, Tsukihime, and Shirukii. People come and go and that’s fine because people take up fansubbing to experience how fansubs were made, just a distraction between their studies, a way to test their Japanese knowledge, or test out their encoding skills. Though some of them left because of my poor leadership or my attitude towards them. I was strict, manipulative, and unreasonable at times and I get that’s why a lot left without saying a word. I’m not proud of what I did and I regretted it. Especially towards Uichan, the group’s real last translator for anime. Uichan, if you’re reading this, I’m very sorry for being an asshole, and forcing you to just drop the debt I owed you. I pray you’re living a good and healthy happy life.

Me on the other hand? SHiN-gx Fansubs-now-Lazy Lily Fansubs will continue scanlating and fansubbing anime in the foreseeable future and looking back at our old fansubs, I had fun doing those, and this hobby is still fun today. There will be roadblocks along the way, some drama with the current crew may show up, but they’re things we’ll have to overcome. Everything is never perfect. Of course, thank you for your continued support after all these years!
